I thought I’d drop in a review on one of my favorite and probably most versatile trouser in my probably overkill armory.

I’ve taken these lightweight hiking trousers all over from Peru to Australia, to Scotland and other corners of the UK in all seasons. They are pretty tough for such a lightweight trouser (at just 330 grams!) the best selling point for me is the fact they weight so little and pack down so small. For me who (not during a pandemic) tends to travel a lot this makes them ideal. They tend to be one of the items I will always take with me.

In unsettled weather with showers I’ve found these trousers dry the fastest of any I’ve had. In hot weather the venting in the sides is really useful. I’ve even used them at the local climbing wall and they do a good job at that to, being lightweight enough to not get too hot when you are really exerting yourself.

Pro’s: Super lightweight ( at only 330g!), surprisingly warm. Vented for summer. Very packable. Very quick drying. Zipped pockets to stop your stuff falling out if you are scrambling. They come in a variety of colors and they are very durable considering how light they are! The BMC edition goes especially well with the Montane trailblazer 30 rucksack.

Con’s: Not the cheapest trousers but you do get what you pay for. Pretty popular in the grey and black so you are going to end up looking like a lot of other hikers! Not so great in cold wind without additional layers.

Montane do call these a ‘four season’ trouser however I do feel for some people that might be a push. Personally I find if you use them with a base layer legging in winter such as Merino wool this take them up to being a four season trouser.

I’d give these a solid 9/10 the only thing I’d disagree with is the ‘four season’ statement. Personally I don’t feel they are water resistant or warm enough to live up to that without a set of base layer leggings and over-trousers. Otherwise a highly recommended product, I’m yet to find a contender that’s so versatile and as an adventurer who goes further afield I find them perfect for international hiking.

Do you have these trousers? What do you think and what do you use them for? Answer in the comments below!
