I have to admit I wasn’t too sure about going for a mid-boot to run in but after having a great experience with my standard Speed-goats, I thought I’d give them a try. Especially as it’s soon my intention to have a go at fast-packing these seemed ideal. Personally I don’t see the point in the normal sort of waterproof trail runner usually just for the simple reason you only need to hit one deep enough puddle or stream and it’s right over the top. You can remedy that by wearing gaiters but that’s just more gear you can lose! So that in mind I gave these a try being an apparent solution which additional ankle support!
Having the extra ankle support takes a little getting used to at first. But after numerous really muddy runs down river banks, testing over the local hills and even using for hiking over the Lake District fells I can say I really like these. They look slightly strange as with all Hokas but it does grow on you and I love the black and green colourway in mine. They also weight virtually nothing just like any other Hoka shoe / boot at just 358g
Grip 9/10: These use Vibram megagrip, which is super grippy as the name suggests. It is not as durable as some soles which is obviously the trade off for more grip but for the performance I’m totally sold. I think if you expect a pair of soles to last forever either these are not for you or maybe manage your expectations. I’ve ran in summer and heard these actually gripping the rock with a almost velcro sound so….that’s how grippy it is. On mud I can say these are pretty good even on clay but they don’t have super deep lugs so don’t expect to be welded to the floor in that situation. Nobody does well on slippy clay it’s the worst.
Comfort 10/10: I’m only giving these a 10 as I’m yet to find a sole that rivals Hokas in term’s of comfort. They are the thickest most shock absorbing soles I’ve ever seen. The shock absorption especially if you are a long distance or ultra marathon runner really is quite brilliant. My knees have really thanked me for purchasing these trainers. The fit as a general seems pretty narrow which suits me perfectly as I have narrow feet. The lacing system is pretty good also with the included flat lock laces. I have to admit I did add lock laces to mine as I find them even more comfortable but that’s personal preference.
Performance 8/10: Only reason why these get an 8 is due to the cushioning, I find it absorbs a bit of energy from my run and after transitioning to these I was noticing I wasn’t getting the same kind of speed I usually have, more effort felt required. But on the flipside this is more than worth getting used to if you are planning on running crazy long distances.
Waterproofing: Well it works, and that’s good. I don’t notice my feet getting too warm in these so I’m quite impressed with the breathability.
Trust me when I say I have taken these to hell and back, I’d highly recommend them for running ultramarathons, super long distance hikes and ‘ultra-challenges’ as they do really reduce the damage to your feet / knees. However as with all trainers / boots go and get yourself fitted at a shop that does fittings, everyones feet are different never assume what works for one person will work for you!
